Japanese Mindfulness Meets Modern Life: Reflections from Peatix’s first Kokoro Gathering in NYC

Community Stories Apr 10, 2025

The Kokoro Gathering brought together a vibrant community for a soul-nourishing afternoon of self-discovery and cultural connection. Held at Japan Village in Brooklyn, the event featured four experts in Japanese mindfulness wisdom, who guided participants on how to improve their spatial harmony and holistic wellness.

The afternoon began with Yoko Ohashi, a Zen practitioner, who invited attendees to join her in a guided meditation. Through stillness and breath, Yoko helped participants understand how mindfulness enhances creative expression and appreciation by grounding us to be present in the moment. Yoko also shared her personal journey and proceeded to set the emotional tone for the rest of the day by enabling attendees to feel more centered and reflective on their own journey.

Next, Junko Matsushita, an organization expert, introduced her signature method: the Three Steps for Simple Organization. With a practical and engaging demonstration using labeled storage containers, Junko emphasized grouping items by function, placing items in convenient locations and consciously labeling for easy identification. Junko’s message on how physical order creates space for mental clarity and creativity immediately resonated. Participants eagerly applied her teachings in real-time by engaging in a quick activity of decluttering their phone apps in 15 minutes.

Following a short intermission, Japanese Feng Shui consultant, Ai M. Johnson, offered a strategic exploration of how our living spaces affect our inner lives. Her core message, “Love your home, love yourself,” sparked meaningful dialogue on how physical environments can directly impact and shape one’s emotional well-being. Through simple Feng Shui principles, Ai showed how to navigate the spatial challenges of New York apartments to improve flow and harmony.

Soon after, acupuncturist Dr Michiko Yoshifuji led an educational session on Japanese wellness secrets. Her presentation on hara hachibu (eating until 80% full), the mindfulness behind tea culture, and the practice of acupressure, invoked many curious questions. Attendees were then paired up for hands-on acupressure exercises and discussed the Japanese concept of Ikigai, or “reason for being.” Dr Michiko affirmed how such practices improved one’s body awareness which is essential to living a creative, resilient, and joyful life.

Two surprise elements that brought warmth and joy to the gathering. Following the four engaging sessions, participants were treated to a special Onigiri Networking Session that encouraged relaxed and open dialogue among participants. Here, participants savored the opportunity to sample hand-pressed rice balls and kombucha tea and get to know each other a little better.
